Waukegan

Ranking: Waukegan High School music students have once again made history, in helping the music program achieve its highest ranking ever. Students in the band, choir and orchestra have combined to finish as the third-ranked school among all Illinois High School Association Class AA schools in the state. This is the music program’s highest ranking ever, and its fourth straight top-10 ranking in the state. Music programs are ranked based on individual and group performances at competitions. Students are rated individually based on their performances at Solo/Ensemble Contests, where they are asked to perform in front of a judge. Each music group (Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, Varsity Choir and Treble Choir) is also rated as part of Organizational Contests. Points earned from both competitions are then added up to give a final ranking. With 883.5 points scored in the Solo/Ensemble and Organizational contests, the music students at WHS were the highest ranked among all Chicago-area high schools, and finished more than 100 points ahead any other Lake County school. During the solo/ensemble contest, a total of 83 students earned Division I rating — the highest rating possible — either as a soloist or in a small ensemble. Collectively, the choir (2nd place), orchestra (3rd place) and band (10th place) each finished in the top 10 in the solo/ensemble contests.

Scholar: Waukegan High Schools senior Jonathon Pizano, son of Maribele Garcia and Salvador Pizano, was named the school’s most recent Gates Millennium Scholarship winner. He is one of just 1,000 nationwide recipients of the prestigious award. He is a College Studies Program student in House 8, where he carries a 4.9 weighted GPA and a schedule full of Advanced Placement courses. In addition to a rigorous class load, he also chairs the Hours Committee (community service) for National Honor Society. He is also Schuler Scholar, and is involved in Waukegan 2 College. Additionally, he is a runner on the cross country team, and is currently competing as a member of the varsity boys volleyball team. Pizano is the fourth WHS student ever to be awarded the Gates Millennium Scholarship, and one of just 1,000 awardees from more than 52,000 applicants in 2015. Additionally, he said he is thankful for the WHS staff members who helped him on his application, particularly Chuck Gutman and William Davis, who served as his nominator and recommender, respectably.
