In a sweep that investigated potential underage liquor sales in the Round Lake area last week, undercover buyers with the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Liquor Commission found three of 15 businesses failed by selling alcohol to minors.
According to a statement from authorities, the establishments in violation of the Illinois Liquor Control Act were Round Lake Liquors at 210 Washington St. in Round Lake, Tower Food & Liquors at 417 Railroad Ave. in Round Lake, and PJ’S Park Inn at 30 E. Main St. in Round Lake Park.
The clerks at each were cited for unlawful sale of alcohol to a minor, according to the Illinois Liquor Commission.
Commission spokesman Terry Hortsman said a first offense can result in a fine up to $500 or a one-day liquor license suspension. A second offense in the same year calls for a fine of $1,500 to $3,000 and a one- to five-day suspension of the liquor license.
Two establishments that previously sold to minors passed the most recent test, officials said.
The checks are part of an ongoing undercover and cooperative law enforcement operation conducted by agents of the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC), local law enforcement officials and underage participants recruited from area high schools and colleges. The teams randomly visit liquor stores, restaurants and bars in communities around the state to check for compliance with state laws mandating that no liquor is sold to persons under 21 years old.
