Despite the less than desirable weather conditions at the Red Grange Invitational at Wheaton Warrenville South High School, the host school and Glenbard West both were able to achieve some impressive performances in the crowded field.
The 14-team meet has an interesting format — each individual event is contested in three classes (A, B and C) with one entry from each school in each class. In the class A meet on Friday, which included relays, Evanston High School came out on top with 68 points. Hononegah Community High School in Rockton finished second with 63 points while Centennial High School from Champaign finished third with 60 points. Glenbard West was fourth, just a point behind at 59 points. Wheaton Warrenville South finished tied for seventh with Naperville North and Prospect with 37 points.
Glenbard West found most success in the distance events. In the 3,200 meters, senior Jake Jaskowiak finished second overall in 9:42.96 to score eight points for the Hilltoppers. In the class B heat, Glenbard West senior Paul Christian won (9:52.05) while junior Simon Peterson finished second in the class C heat.
Glenbard West was nearly as dominant in the 1,600 meters, with senior Chris Buechner taking third overall in the A race, Jaskowiak finishing first in the B race (4:31.07) and junior Eric Neumann finishing first in the C race (4:35.28). In the 800 meters, Glenbard West senior Ben Hecht finished second overall in 2:01.44 and senior Nathan Crail finished third in the B race (2:04.34).
In the sprints, Glenbard West was led by Mohamed Gborie, who finished second overall in the 200 meters (24.07) and sixth in the 100 meters (11.61). In the 300-meter hurdles sophomore Vince Divinere finished fourth (42.88).
The Hilltoppers found success with all four of their relay teams, with the 4×100 and 4×400 meter relays finishing third; the 4×800 meter relay fourth; and the 4×200 meter relay fifth.
Senior Ben Marcus finished fourth in the long jump to score 4 points for Glenbard West with a leap of 19 feet, 11 inches. He also jumped 40 feet, 8 inches in the triple jump, good enough for sixth place and one more point. Senior Ryan Trippel threw the shot put 42 feet, 2 inches, which was good enough for sixth as well.
Wheaton Warrenville South was led by junior Brandon Bell, who won the 400 meters in 51.30 seconds. The Tigers had a strong showing in that event, with senior Josh Prueter taking fifth in the B race (53.76) and sophomore Nate Guerreiro taking second in the C race (53.86). The team of freshman Joe Zubak, junior Pat Cooper and sophomores Kyle Thompson and Nate Guerreiro finished fourth in the 4×400 meter relay.
In the 3,200 meters, Tiger senior J T Moscardini took fifth place overall in 10:06.17, while sophomore Matt Moore took sixth in the B race (10:23.40) and junior Jeremy Ambrosio placed fourth in the C race (10:34.44). In the 1,600 meters, sophomore Alexi Sorokin finished sixth (4:40.84), while Mike Hanson took third in the B race (4:38.92) and Gabe Lightbody took sixth in the C race (4:53.22). Senior Salat Aweys finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (42.89).
Wheaton Warrenville South junior Blaze Barista finished second in the triple jump with a 43 feet, 11 inch jump. In the pole vault, senior Andrew Ives finished fourth by clearing 12 feet, 3 inches. Senior Anthony Dohse won the B event and sophomore Tom Ansiel won the C event, each clearing the same height as Ives, who also took second place in the high jump (5 feet, 11 inches). Senior Dan Knight finished fifth in the discus (133 feet, 3 inches).
