The shooting death of Keith “Tony” Dumas on Friday morning remains a mystery.

And on the heels of Dumas’ slaying, a second homicide, on Saturday evening, also left few clues for investigators.

The only good news from the city’s most recent violence is that Dumas’ dog, CJ, who was wounded by the killer, is recovering nicely, despite the loss of his right hind leg.

Westchester Animal Clinic employee Brenda, who asked that her last name not be used, said Dr. Laurence Reed amputated the dog’s leg.

“He’s doing very well, he’s stable and he’s getting around just fine,” Brenda said. She confirmed that Reed performed the surgery at no cost to the Dumas family.

Investigators returned to the Glen Park neighborhood Monday where Dumas was killed in an effort to locate witnesses who might add details to what police already know: Dumas was walking less than a block from home about 10 a.m. when a dark-colored car slowed alongside him as he crossed railroad tracks on Adams Street north of 41st Avenue, police said.

Witnesses said there appeared to be three men in the car, but so far investigators have no more details on the car or any suspects, Detective Lorenzo Davis said. Someone in the car shot and killed Dumas, 48, and wounded CJ.

Gary Animal Control officers took CJ to the Westchester Animal Clinic in Porter for treatment. Brenda said CJ would be released this week to the Dumas family.

On Saturday, Breone Major, 23, was shot and killed inside her Oak Knoll Renaissance apartment about 6:30 p.m., police said. Her brother is Ronnie Major, a one-time Gary tow company owner whose ex-wife is accused in Porter County of arranging to kill a tow employee during the couple’s divorce.

Lt. Thomas Pawlak said evidence shows the killer did not force open the door.

The victim, who had moved to the west side apartment complex just three months ago, was found dead on her living room floor when Sgt. Gregory Wolf and Patrolman Gregory Nanney, who were working as security officers at Oak Knoll, arrived at the scene, Pawlak said.

The following evening, police received reports that a man and woman used a gun to blast open the lock on the Breone Major’s apartment door. No additional information on the incident was available, police said.

Davis is investigating both homicides. Anyone with information can call him at 881-4738.
