A Woodstock man is charged with aggravated battery after his baby son was diagnosed with a skull fracture, police said.

Cody A. Pennington, 20, was being held Monday on $250,000 bond after his arrest Sunday on charges of causing great bodily harm to a child under the age of 13, according to a police news release.

Authorities said paramedics were called to an apartment in the 1400 block of Commons Drive in Woodstock because the 4-month-old baby was crying uncontrollably, appeared to be in distress and was having difficulty breathing.

The baby was taken to Centegra Hospital, where he was discovered to have a skull fracture and hemorrhaging on his brain, the release said. The child was then transported by helicopter to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for further treatment.

Staff at Lutheran General told the Woodstock Police Department and Illinois Department of Children and Family Services that the injuries suffered by the infant are consistent with those caused by violent shaking, police said.

Woodstock detectives interviewed Pennington and the mother of the baby at Lutheran General, and Pennington was subsequently arrested early Sunday morning, authorities said.
