player ready...Cinco de Mayo is next week, and while the fiesta often includes imbibing, several restaurants are offering both food and drink specials to commemorate the annual May 5 celebration. Here’s a selection.
Commonwealth Tavern (2000 W. Roscoe St., 773-697-7965) offers a $6 queso fundido special along with $6 Milagro margaritas and $3 Corona and Corona Light.
Kanela Breakfast Club in Lakeview (3231 N. Clark St., 773-248-1622), Old Town (1552 N. Wells St., 312-255-1206) and Wicker Park (1408 N. Milwaukee Ave., 773-661-1010) feature a breakfast quesadilla ($10) comprising scrambled eggs, chorizo, black beans, corn and chihuahua cheese served with salsa verde, sour cream and pico de gallo. House-made margaritas are $5 each and pitchers are $25.
Nacional 27 (325 W. Huron St., 312-664-2727) celebrates on May 1, 2 and 4 with Mexican menu specials, including shrimp and octopus cocktail ($12); jalapenos rellenos with queso fresco, house chorizo, tomato and cilantro sauce ($9.95); enchiladas with vegetables in a white cheese sauce, chicken in suiza and pork with green mole ($16.95) and rum flan ($6.95). Casamigos margaritas are $9 and on May 2 Dos Equis will be $2.
Pioneer Tavern Group holds an Uno de Mayo bar crawl at 7 p.m. May 1. There will be complimentary trolley rides among three of its establishments. Frontier (1072 N. Milwaukee Ave., 773-772-4322) features $3 tacos, elotes and Dos Equis, $5 Milagro tequila and Paloma cocktails, and $6 Dos-Aritas made with Milagro Tequila, Dos Equis, lime, sour mix and triple sec. Lottie’s Pub (1925 W. Cortland, 773-489-0738) offers the same drink specials, along with $6 tacos and Dos Equis is $3.50. The Pony (1638 W. Belmont, 773-828-5055) hosts a free Milagro brand sampling beginning at 8 p.m. There will also be $3 Dos Equis and $5 Milagro tequila and Paloma cocktails.
Roof on the Wit (201 N. State St., 312-239-9502) offers shrimp or steak tacos ($16), chips and salsa ($11) and queso fundido ($14). Drink specials include spicy margaritas made with Avion Reposado, lime juice, agave nectar, cucumber slices, cilantro and serrano pepper, and mango margaritas ($13); Avion tequila flights ($21-30) and Micheladas ($8) with Clamato juice, lime, hot sauce and choice of Mexican beer.
Stretch Bar & Grill (3485 N. Clark St., 773-755-3980) features $2 tacos and $3 Corona, Corona Light and Modelo and half-off tequila.
Tallboy Taco (325 W. Huron St., 312-488-4917) offers a three-course lunch deal, which includes chips and salsa, guacamole and any four tacos for $18. Margaritas ($8) and Coronas ($3) are on special all day.
Tokio Pub (1900 E. Higgins Rd., 847-278-5181) in Schaumburg offers $1 tacos, including crispy chicken, steak, nacho taco, tiger shrimp, and crispy fish tacos. Yuzu and pineapple margaritas are $5.
Tuscany (1014 W. Taylor St., 312-829-1990) features $5 pizza selections, including its margherita with tomatoes, mozzarella, basil and extra virgin olive oil; speck with gorgonzola, smoked prosciutto and mozzarella; funghi e taleggio with caramelized mushrooms, taleggio cheese, arugula and truffle oil; affumicata with smoked mozzarella, apple bacon, tomatoes and caramelized onion; and Regina with Tuscan sausage, tomatoes, roasted pepper and mushroom. $5 margaritas will also be available.
