The White Sox’s Melky Cabrera and Royals’ Alex Gordon put on quite a defensive display Sunday in left field.

Gordon tumbled into the box seats to grab Micah Johnson’s foul ball in the sixth inning, and Cabrera topped it by robbing Eric Hosmer of extra bases in the eighth with a man on base by making a leaping grab at the wall.

“You get out there during the day and you can’t really see the ball off the bat, and the way the shadows are, great catches,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

Welcome back: The Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Scott Carroll to fill the roster spot of reliever Matt Albers, who broke his pinky finger on his pitching hand during Thursday night’s brawl.

“I’m really excited because I know the ability I possess and I can help this team a lot,” Carroll said. “I had a really good spring training. It’s cool to be in a familiar place. It helps a lot.”

Carroll said he was aware of the brawl between the Sox and Royals.

“It’s honestly kind of crazy because I’m from Kansas City,” Carroll said. “I’m hearing from all of my K.C. people what’s going on, like ‘Hey what are your boys doing to our boys.’ It’s kind of crazy the way things turned out. But I’m just excited for my opportunity and I want to help the team as much as I can.”

Royal treatment: Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain, who was suspended two games for his role in the brawl, is appealing the ruling.

“It is what it is,” Cain said. “That’s what happens when you go out there and fight and do things, you’ve got to pay the consequences. We will see what happens.”

Cain said he thinks the bad blood between the Sox and Royals has run its course.

“I think it’s over with. I think we all got our emotions out that night,” he said. “We’re going to go back and just play baseball and leave it at that.”

Roster moves: Pitcher Eric Surkamp was designated for assignment. Right-hander Daniel Webb was called up as the 26th man for the second game Sunday, then returned to Triple-A Charlotte after the game.
