Name: Tilley T4MO Organic Airflo

What it is: a lightweight hat made of 98 percent organic cotton and 2 percent Spandex. Like all Tilley hats, the fabric has a UPF 50+ rating and is certified to shield wearers from 98 percent of harmful UVA/UVB radiation for ultimate sun protection. Its sun-shielding brim measures 31/2 inches in the front and back and 21/2 inches on the sides. The hat floats (just in case), repels rain and features a tie for windy conditions. Venting near the top provides air flow. It is insured for two years from all hazards (with a 50 percent deductible) and carries Tilley’s lifetime guarantee not to wear out.

The good: Tilley hats are famous for their sun protection, and I love traveling with a hat that’s got my back — and my face. If I forget sunscreen or run out on a trip, my face is shielded. And the Airflo’s tie has come in handy on boats and on windy days. If the hat falls into a lake, it really does float. Plus it dries quickly after a dunk or a wash. It’s a handy piece of clothing to pack for changing weather, and the hidden pocket in the top of the hat is handy for stashing a couple of credit cards and cash.

The bad: After a wash, the Airflo requires a couple minutes of reshaping.

Cost: $84
