Mark Senak, candidate for the Glen Ellyn Board of Trustees, extended his narrow lead over Carol Fontana by two votes after the DuPage County Election Commission added absentee and provisional votes to those cast in the April 7 consolidated election.

Senak, along with John Kenwood, president of the District 41 Board of Education, and incumbent Trustee Pete Ladesic were the top three vote-getters in the four-person race for three spots on the board in unofficial results.

While Senak did not respond to messages April 22, he did comment after the consolidated election April 7. He said he planned to study issues facing the board of trustees, including downtown business development, in preparation for assuming office.

Ladesic, who will serve his third term on the Board of Trustees, earned 27.25 percent of the vote in unofficial results. Kenwood garnered 25.62 percent, and Senak earned 23.6 percent, less than half-a-percent more than Fontana’s 23.52 percent.

“It was close, but I didn’t think the absentee and provisional votes would change the results,” Fontana said Tuesday.

The vote tallies remain unofficial until the final canvass is set for April 27, when the election commission will formally certify the results.

Fontana said she has faith the election commission counted the votes fairly. Fontana could file a petition of discovery to review a percentage of votes cast in up to 25 percent of the precincts involved, but said she has no plans to contest Senak’s narrow victory.

Fontana said she plans to seek other ways to serve in the community, including a volunteer spot on a community board or commission.

Fontana, along with Senak and Kenwood, earned endorsements from the Civic Betterment Party before the election. She lauded Senak and Kenwood, saying she knows they will both do a good job representing the village.

Key issues facing the incoming board include development of the village’s historic downtown.
