The Waukegan Exchange Club named Lake County Sheriff’s Sgt. John Hall as Command Officer of the Year and Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Jon Triplett as Deputy of the Year at a ceremony April 14.

Sgt. Hall received the honor for his dedication to utilizing technology to enhance inmate programming and streamline processes as well as his steadfast support of fellow officers requiring IT assistance, acccording to an Exchange Club news release.

He is a 24-year veteran of the Lake County Sheriff’s Adult Correctional Facility. In late 2013, the national GED program transitioned from paper test to computerization. The challenges facing inmates were twofold; inmates preparing to take the exam must have the computer skills necessary to take the test, and early test-takers were required to be completely finished by Dec. 31, 2013, before test scores expired. Sgt. Hall implemented a plan for a smooth transition to the new GED testing and created the jail’s first computer lab.

Sgt. Hall assisted in Jail Booking to complete the digital display of housing and booking information, retiring the manual 28-year-old magnetic board. He was also instrumental in the implementation of a digital officer log used throughout the facility, replacing paper books and enabling efficient access to officer activities. Lastly, Sgt. Hall filmed, edited and produced training videos for new officers.

Deputy Jon Triplett is an 8-year veteran of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Court Security Unit. Triplett serves as a member of the Tactical Response Team (TRT), and is a TRT sniper and lead trainer for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. He is a founding member of the Court Emergency Response Team (CERT) initiated by Sheriff Mark Curran, resulting in increased court safety and security, according to the release.

Triplett represents the Sheriff’s Office with pride and distinction. He strives to “raise the bar” and puts forth his best effort in each endeavor. In addition to his assigned responsibilities, he works off-duty training members of the judiciary on defensive measures to enhance personal safety.

Deputy Triplett received the Waukegan Exchange Club’s Deputy of the Year award for his rapid response to a courthouse visitor who fell to the ground and was unresponsive. Triplett quickly called for a rescue unit and simultaneously grabbed the nearest portable AED. He then joined his partner, Deputy David Sabourin, who was performing CPR, and attached the AED. The AED indicated no electrical activity whatsoever, and the computerized voice from the device advised to continue CPR. Both Triplett and Sabourin continued with CPR for more than six minutes, until the subject opened his eyes and began to moan.

In the release, Sheriff Curran said, “I am proud of the 2015 Exchange Club nominees and recipients. Their dedication to law enforcement and protecting the public over self-interest is truly admirable. Congratulations to Command Officer of the Year Sgt. John Hall and Deputy of the Year Court Security Officer Jon Triplett for their accomplishments and achievements.”

Nominations for Command Officer of the year included sergeants John Hall, Robert Kenyon and Tom. Detective Chris Covelli, Deputy Adam Domerchie, Court Security Officer Jon Triplett, and Deputy James Yanecek all were nominated for Deputy of the Year.
