This week’s Showcase — our longest ever — is Laura Osnes and Steven Pasquale from Lyric Opera’s “Carousel.”
The classic 1945 musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II is about a romance, seemingly doomed from the start, between Julie Jordan, Osnes, and carnival barker Billy Bigelow, Pasquale.
Although beginning with little more than coy flirtation, the relationship soon spirals downward into abuse and neglect — actions Billy must answer for in the afterlife. But before all that, there was a lovely chance encounter on a bench.

“Carousel” plays Lyric Opera through May 3.
