A spaghetti dinner fundraiser was a success, guaranteeing that slain Patrolman Jeff Westerfield’s five children can travel to Washington, D.C., next month for the national police memorial service, Gary police Fraternal Order of Police president Sam Abegg said.

The dinner, held last week, brought in about $1,200, not including several separate cash donations, including $800 from a group of Gary police retirees, Abegg said.

“We are proud to have been able to donate monetary resources to assist the children,” retired officer Clem J. Allen said as he presented the check to Abegg.

Westerfield was shot and killed on duty in July. His name will be added to a memorial wall in the nation’s capital as part of week-long ceremonies in mid-May.

The FOP organized the fundraiser to provide travel and lodging expenses for his children.
