One person was injured and about two dozen people were displaced after an extra-alarm fire broke out late Tuesday in northwest suburban Lake in the Hills.

The blaze started on an exterior deck of a three-story apartment building in the 1300 block of Cunat Court just before midnight, according to Battalion Chief John Knebl, of the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District.

Fire officials struck out the fire around 12:45 a.m., according to a statement from the fire protection district.

One person was rescued from the balcony on the third floor via a ladder, the statement said. The male, whose age was not immediately known, suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin where his condition stabilized, Knebl told WGN-TV.

No other injuries were reported.

Between 20 and 30 people were displaced from 18 residential units because of the blaze, according to the statement. Knebl added that the building may not be safe to enter.

The Illinois state fire marshal’s office is investigating.
