Violinist David Taylor comes to the Auditorium at the Bethel Church in Crown Point on April 17 for a performance entitled, “Spirited Violin.”
The performance is presented by the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and Tammie Miller, marketing coordinator, says the pieces that will be performed will make listeners say either, “I know this piece,” or “why don’t I know this piece?”
Taylor is known to audiences as a versatile soloist, chamber player, and orchestral musician who has been delighting Chicago audiences since 1979 when he became the Assistant Concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Born in Canton, Ohio, in 1949, Taylor first studied the violin with his father at the age of four. He earned bachelor and master degrees at Juilliard School of Music.
His violin is a J.B. Guadagnini made in Piacenza, Italy, in 1744.
“He is a real talent,” says Miller. “Our conductor, Kirk Muspratt, has been trying for a while to get David Taylor to come play with us but his schedule is terribly busy. Finally worked out.”
Taylor will be performing “Toccata and Fugue” (Bach/Stokowski), “Double Concerto for Oboe and Violin” (Bach), “The Lark Ascending” (Vaughan Williams), “Cadenza” from “Fiddler on the Roof” (John Williams), and “Symphony No. 3 —Scottish” (Mendelssohn).

Miller says, “He is bringing one of his signature pieces, ‘The Lark Ascending,’ and it is one of the pieces that really sticks with you. He is also doing a version of a song from ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ that John Williams wrote. It wasn’t in the musical, but was in the movie, and any time Williams would play with the CSO, David always wanted him to play it. With David’s help, Williams finished it and presented it to David.”
“From Bach to Williams, these are some of the most loved pieces from around the world,” said Kirk Muspratt, music director and conductor of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra.
Taylor is not only with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, but he is also a frequent performer at Ravinia and on WFMT.
His performance promises to send crowd soaring as he partners with Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra oboist Jennet Ingle on Bach’s mysterious “Double Concerto.”
The evening will begin for ticket holders at 6:15 p.m. with a pre-concert lecture led by Maestro Muspratt, and a violin-cam promises to make close ups of Taylor’s performance and techniques especially interesting.
