Schools across Lake County announce fundraisers, concerts, events and honors for students.

Grayslake

Fundraiser: Grayslake Middle School students and staff will hold their 2nd annual St. Baldrick’s fundraiser to help raise money for childhood cancer research. This year’s fundraiser, set for April 17 at 440 N. Barron Blvd., is especially poignant for the Grayslake community after the death of Park Campus third-grade student A.J. Peterson from diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, an embedded, inoperable cancerous tumor in the brainstem. Last year, more than $6,100 was raised for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Approximately 40 people had their heads shaved, or hair cut to help others. The event is open to the public with an evening event to go along with the school celebration which includes an all-school assembly in the morning. The school is hoping to raise $15,000. Posters are appearing in local restaurants and businesses, raffle items are also being donated by the local community. Monetary donations can be made online at the GMS St. Baldrick’s event page at http://www.stbaldricks.org/events/gmsmakeyourmark2015. Many teams and individuals have already signed up to have their heads shaved or hair cut, and GMS has raised 17 percent of the goal.

Lake Forest

Honors: Michael Capozzi of Lake Forest was named to the honor roll at Brooks School in North Andover, Mass., for the fall semester. Brooks is an independent coeducational, college preparatory boarding and day school for grades 9-12.

Mundelein

Concert: The Mundelein High School Master Singers and Honors Wind Ensemble will perform together in concert at 7 p.m. April 15 at the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, 1000 E. Maple Ave. Admission is free. These top-tier ensembles within the choral and instrumental programs at MHS will perform selections from their spring repertoires, and the groups will combine for a finale performance of “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Details, (847) 949-2200.

Meet and greets: Dr. Kevin Myers, Mundelein High School superintendent, will be available for coffee and conversation with members of the community at 7 p.m. April 16 at the school, 1350 W. Hawley St., and at 10 a.m. May 6 at McDonald’s, Route 83 and Midlothian Road. Residents are invited to stop by and speak with the District 120 leader and share thoughts, ideas and a cup of coffee. Details, (847) 949-2200 or http://www.d120.org.

Contest: An essay titled “Truth in Many Dimensions,” written by Mundelein High School junior Darin Chaichitatorn, took first place in the 17-18 age group in a national essay contest, Live Deliberately, sponsored by the World Wide Waldens. The organization helps young people reflect on their environment ethic — where it came from and where it is going — so they might develop an ethical compass that will help them navigate environmental issues and decisions for a lifetime. The group is based in Lincoln, Mass., near Walden Pond. There were nearly 500 entries in the contest this year and the finalists’ essays were reviewed by a group of volunteers including educators at the high school and college level, published authors, a journalist and a community art educator.

Waukegan

Winners: Waukegan School District 60 announced the winners of its annual Young Authors literary competition. This year’s entries featured many imaginative and creative stories that demonstrate the talent and hard work put forth by students. The following students and their families have been invited to travel to Illinois State University on May 16, to represent District 60 at the 41st annual Illinois Statewide Young Authors’ Conference: Denisse Silva, Little Fort Elementary School; Joshua Maldonado, Cooke Magnet School; Michelle Colin, Washington Elementary School; and Jillian Anit and Jasmine Flores, Abbott Middle School. At the conference, which is sponsored by the Illinois Language and Literacy Council, in conjunction with the Illinois State Board of Education, students will attend special workshops with well-known children’s authors, and their books will receive a special seal in recognition of their achievement. Waukegan’s winners were selected by district educators based on the official Young Authors’ rubric. In addition to district winners attending the special statewide ceremony, several dozen Waukegan Public Schools finalists and their families will be honored by Waukegan Public Schools at a Young Authors ceremony.
