If you expected Tiger Woods to dominate/fall flat on his face at the Masters this weekend, well, you’ll have to wait until at least his next tournament. While the most recognizable golfer on Earth played well in his “comeback” (5 under par), Woods wasn’t the big story.
That distinction goes to Jordan Spieth, who captured his first green jacket Sunday. (Yes, it’s still far from in style.)
The 21-year-old—he’s just a few months older than Woods was when he won his first Masters, in 1997—broke the 36- and 54-hole scoring records before even teeing off in the final round. Spieth ended up tying Woods’ tournament record at 18 under en route to his four-shot victory.
“It was very nerve-wracking [Sunday],” Spieth told CBS after his win. “I didn’t sleep well last night, just got out here and got in a little rhythm … and couldn’t let up. It was the most incredible week of my life.”
You’ll be seeing a lot more of this Dallas native, no doubt. In the meantime, here are eight things to know about the budding superstar.
You’re history, Phil
Twenty-five birdies in one Masters? Sorry, Phil Mickelson, that’s old news. Spieth snapped that record on the 10th hole Sunday and finished with 28.
Illinois agrees with him
In July 2013, at age 19, Spieth became the fourth-youngest winner in PGA history, conquering the field at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill.
Karma’s not his thing
Being from Dallas, naturally Spieth is a huge Cowboys fan. So you can imagine what he thought of that infamous non-catch by Dez Bryant in the playoff loss at Green Bay in January.
“Tired of this whole karma crap people are saying.. That was a TERRIBLE call,” Spieth tweeted.
He bleeds burnt orange
Spieth led Texas to the NCAA title in 2012, his only season with the Longhorns. He’s still a huge fan of Texas in general.
“I don’t think people can watch University of Texas basketball or football games with me—really anything Texas is playing—without wanting to punch me in the face,” he told Golf Digest in 2012.
Country’s his jam
According to his Website, Spieth is a big country music fan and has played with Jake Owen at a Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Family comes first
“She’s the best thing that ever happened to our family,” Spieth has said of his younger sister, Ellie, who has autism. Children with special needs are just one of the causes the Jordan Spieth Charitable Fund benefits.

He’s off the market
Sorry, ladies. Spieth is dating his high school sweetheart, Annie Verret.
His house is nicer than yours
Spieth recently purchased a home in Dallas. The price tag: $2.3 million. Pool party at his place!
