Comcast SportsNet’s new documentary, “Believe: The Story of 2005 White Sox” (Sunday, 7 p.m.), required a significant voice to be narrator for the biggest moment in franchise history.
But who?
For a CSN film about the Cubs, it was an easier choice. Producers Sarah Lauch and Ryan McGuffey enlisted noted Cubs fan William Petersen to narrate “5 Outs,” the story of ill-fated 2003 Cubs and Steve Bartman.
“The Cubs have a number of nationally recognized fans we could pick from,” McGuffey said. “It wasn’t as clear with the Sox.”

Lauch and McGuffey knew “Homeland” star Mandy Patinkin grew up on the South Side and that he was a Sox fan. They put in the request and sure enough, he said yes.
“He was awesome. Everything you’d think he would be,” McGuffey said. “He told a good story about how his father would be smiling down from heaven. He used to take him to Sox games on Saturdays. For him to say that validated what we were trying to do.”
