Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Larry Steinberg, a salesman from Wheeling, loves the North Shore. He loves hot dogs too, and we caught up with him during a workday lunch at Cookers Red Hots in Deerfield Lake Cook Plaza.

So you dropped in at Cookers…

I’m working in the area, calling on customers and this is the best hot dog on the North Shore and the best barbecue and Greek chicken. The best!

So Portillo’s might come to Deerfield around the corner on Waukegan Road, thoughts?

Portillo’s? Good, but not the same. Not as good as this (Cookers). That’s why I come here. But it’s gonna be tough. They’re a tough competitor.

Pepsi or Coke?

Diet Coke, easy ice.

What’s on your hot dog?

Everything except peppers and I like little celery salt.

So where are you originally from?

I grew up in Chicago. I went to (Nicholas) Senn High School (in Edgewater) and Mather High School (in West Ridge).

Why do you like the North Shore?

The North Shore is clean and nice people, I have some cousins living here in Highland Park. I like the different villages. Kenilworth, Glencoe, Winnetka…I like Deerfield a lot. Deerfield and Highland Park are my favorites.

You’ve got two sons and six grandchildren, you say. What’s your secret to a happy life?

I’m proud of those kids, very proud. Secret to a happy life? Don’t let the small stuff get the best of you.
