Chris Taliaferro is likely be the new alderman of Chicago’s 29th Ward, representing Austin, Galewood and Mont Clare on the city’s West Side.
Incumbent Ald. Deborah Graham called Taliaferro to concede election night, April 7, around 10:30. Taliaferro led Graham 52 percent to 48 percent in unofficial results, with 42 of 44 precincts reporting.
Taliaferro, a Chicago police officer and a lawyer, was supported by U.S. Rep. Danny Davis and former Ald. Isaac “Ike” Carothers, who was convicted of public corruption related to his tenure in office. Graham was backed by Ald. Jason Ervin and Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
“We have worked very hard,” Taliaferro said in a speech to his supporters Tuesday night. “We have taken criticism and adversity but we prevailed. This ward is in great hands, because I promise you we will move this ward forward.”
Graham declined comment late Tuesday night through a spokesman.
