An Aurora police chase ended in the recovery of a loaded gun and the arrest of a felon on Friday afternoon, police said.
According to Aurora police reports, officers were on duty near Smith Street and Liberty Street around 4:30 p.m. when they noticed three men. The area had been the scene of multiple recent shootings and police were on high alert, they said.
The patrol officers continued to watch the men and noticed one, later identified as Damenn Ferrell, 18, reach for his waistband and then walk away from the other men.
Police said Ferrell then began to run through a backyard in the 800 block of Liberty Street and police followed.
At some point, officers witnessed Ferrell allegedly toss something into the backyard of a home. It was recovered and found to be a loaded .38 Taurus revolver. It was found within 1,000 feet of Rollins Elementary School.
Police said officers located Ferrell in the 800 block of Claim Street, where he was taken into custody.
The men Ferrell was with were questioned and released without charges.
Ferrell, 1700 block of Walnut Park Lane, Aurora, was charged with three counts of felony unlawful use of a weapon for having a loaded weapon near a school, having a loaded weapon without a FOID card, and possession of a loaded weapon with a prior felony conviction.
Court records indicate Ferrell has a conviction stemming from a 2013 aggravated robbery.
