Bethesda Lutheran Communities is looking to put a home for intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals in the Saratoga Springs subdivision in Montgomery.

The Montgomery Plan Commission is looking at a special use request for the facility.

The group petitioned the village to operate the facility at a single-family home on Hagaman Lane. The home would be occupied by four young adults who would have adult supervision and care 24 hours a day.

Village planners looked to the Village Comprehensive Plan and it states the land is zoned for single-family detached residential property.

“The proposed convalescent nursing and rest home conforms to the Comprehensive Plan,” Planner Jerad Chipman said.

No residents from the neighborhood appeared at the meeting and public hearing on the proposal. Chipman said everything in the proposal is in compliance with village rules but said he has only received verbal approval from the Department of Human Services, which would license the facility. He said he is expecting the final documents in the next few weeks from the department.

Rachelle Jewison of Bethesda Lutheran Communities spoke to commissioners regarding the home and introduced the intended residents. The three young men and one woman all would have separate bedrooms in the four-bedroom facility. A staff professional would also always be at the home.

Jewison said three of the residents would work outside the home, while the other is finishing his high school education, she said.

Planning Commissioners didn’t discuss the issue at length and only one person on the board asked any questions.

“I am aware of the issue and the people work very well and add to the community …,” said Mildred McNeal-James.
