Police are conducting a death investigation after a 25-year-old woman died in a house fire on the city’s Northwest Side late Saturday.
The fire happened about 10:30 p.m. in the 6000 block of West Nelson Street in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood, police and fire officials said.
Firefighters responded to a blaze in the basement of a bungalow, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Will Knight.
The woman was found dead inside the home, Knight said. The cause of the fire was under investigation early Sunday, officials said.
According to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, which officially identified the woman as Tatiana Yashina of the block in which she died, she was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:10 a.m. After an autopsy, the cause and manner of the woman’s death were both listed as pending.
Police said a man was transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with injuries to his hands and torso. Fire officials said the man was transported in serious-to-critical condition. Both the woman and man were residents of the home, police said.
