Martians will attack Kenosha, Wis., on May 9 — part of the monthlong celebration marking the 100th birthday of actor and filmmaker Orson Welles, born May 6, 1915. The Martians will come to life in a full-cast staging of “The War of the Worlds,” Welles’ spoof radio broadcast that created mass panic in 1938. Welles directed and narrated the realistic-sounding broadcast about an invasion of New York City. Though Welles lived in Kenosha for only the first five years of his life, he will be commemorated with a full slate of events planned by the Citizen Welles Society, including a May 15 screening of his classic film “Citizen Kane.” Another Welles film, “The Magnificent Ambersons,” will be shown May 24. The Orson Welles Trivia Night is May 27. People taking part in a cemetery walk May 30 and 31 will meet his “ancestors,” to be played by six actors in period clothing.
