A search near Island Lake for a person who was believed to be distraught Friday was successful as a helicopter with infra-red technology located a fire and a 32-year-old McHenry man nearby, officials said.

According to a news release Monday, Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were called to 28000 block of Lamphere Road in unincorporated Island Lake concerning a missing adult. The man was visiting a friend when he reportedly made suicidal comments then left the house on foot, authorities said.

The initial ground search was unsuccessful, police said, so the Air-One Emergency Response Coalition helicopter was called in to assist.

According to the sheriff’s office, the helicopter’s tracking technology spotted a small fire near the residence. Crews were directed to the area and the man was found, authorities said. He was taken to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry, where he was admitted for evaluation.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has had deputies assigned as crew members of Air-One since 2012 and has used the helicopter for support on a variety of missions since 2003.
