The Illinois Tollway is eyeing new slogans for its roads, and the public can contribute.

The winning messages will be displayed on rotation on 37 electronic roadway signs along the 286-mile tollway system.

“We always are looking for ways to engage the public and our customers in everything we do here,” said Kristi Lafleur, Illinois Tollway executive director. “We thought this idea of having this contest would be a great opportunity to have our customers help us keep them safe.”

People can offer their slogan

on the Tollway’s website through March 27. Lafleur said about 100 people have already submitted ideas.

The slogans can fall into three categories that discourage dangerous driving habits: driving without a seat belt, driving while impaired and driving while distracted.

Top entries will be posted and polled on the Tollway’s website from April 8 to 16. Three slogans, the most popular message in each category, will be selected.

“It’s pretty difficult trying to figure out how to communicate a message in a short phrase,” Lafleur said. “It’s an art form. The more people we engage the better.”
