Once again, Ovarian Cycle Chicago is ready to roll on Sunday, April 12 from 2:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m. at Midtown Athletic Club, 2211 Waukegan Road, Bannockburn. Thanks to the efforts of many sponsors and participants, including Jenna Eisenberg, chair of the 2014 planning committee, last year’s inaugural event raised more than $55,000 for ovarian cancer research.
“This indoor cycling event is energizing and inspiring! We really are making a difference,” Eisenberg said.
She has a personal stake in this fundraiser; her mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011 and, thankfully, has been cancer free since April 2013.
“My family has been witness to the incredible strength and courage necessary to fight ovarian cancer,” she explained. “This battle is something I never want another family to experience. Ovarian Cycle is helping me with this goal by raising money for much needed research.”
Ovarian Cycle is open to everyone, from beginning riders to experienced indoor cyclists. Participants can pedal at any pace, take breaks or even ride as a team. With no fundraising minimum and only a $50 entrance fee (survivors ride for free), riders are encouraged to set fundraising goals with prizes that will be awarded. Prizes range from water bottles and hats to gym bags and Fitbits. All event participants receive a T-shirt and gift bag, and refreshments are provided. If you are unable to ride, you can participate as a virtual rider to support the cause. There is no registration fee or fundraising minimum for virtual riders.
Ovarian Cycle’s national sponsors are Coca-Cola and Lara Bar. Events are held in cities nationwide and, so far, the program has raised more than $2 million. Funds raised at the Chicago event will help the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, as well as their local gynecologic cancer patient support program, Woman to Woman, at the University of Chicago Medical Center. In other neighborhood news, the holidays are right around the corner. Whether you’re celebrating Easter or Passover, every festivity deserves a great sweet treat! Bonta Italian Deli and Wine Shop, 430 Milwaukee Ave., Lincolnshire, is offering traditional Italian holiday treats for Easter. For an outstanding hostess gift or centerpiece, try their specialty La Colomba, an Easter dove shaped cake. The cake is similar to panettone, but the dough contains candied citrus peel. It is fashioned into a dove shape and topped with pearl sugar and almonds. Yum! Bonta is also featuring these Easter cakes in a lemon cream version and a chocolate one as well. Because these items are seasonal, quantities are limited. For more information, call 847-383-6233 or order at http://www.bontamarket.com.
For Passover, I always try to offer one new sweet treat each year. This year, I will try a recipe that I found through the Northwest Suburban Chabad website at http://www.nwschabad.org. Here is the recipe if you’d like to give it a try.
