Illinoisans of Irish ancestry have more reasons to be proud of their heritage this St. Patrick’s Day.

Overall, they’re better educated, make more money, and are more likely to own their own homes compared with Illinoisans overall, U.S. census data show.

The percentage of Illinois householders of Irish ancestry who own their own homes is 71.5 percent. For Illinois as a whole, the homeownership rate is 65.9 percent.

The median income for Illinois households headed by an Irish-American is $67,422, higher than the median income of $56,210 for all households in the state.

The percentage of Illinoisans of Irish ancestry, age 25 or older, who have at least a bachelor’s degree is 40 percent. For Illinois as a whole, the corresponding rate was 32.1 percent.

The margins of error aren’t meaningful.

The economic and educational status of the Irish in Illinois is similar to those nationally, according to the census’ 2013 American Community Survey.
