Longtime Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar had open-heart surgery on March 3, according to family members and village officials.

Claar’s family said in a statement provided by the village that Claar, who has led Bolingbrook since 1986, had the procedure “to correct an issue we have known about for a while.” The family did not identify the issue.

“The surgery went very well, and he is now recovering,” according to the statement. “He expects to return to work in about a week.’

Reached by phone Wednesday, Claar’s wife, Pat, said the mayor was on the mend.

“He came through with flying colors, so we’re pretty excited,” she said.

Claar was last re-elected in 2013, when he ran unopposed.
