A South Side man was ordered held in lieu of $50,000 bail Sunday after prosecutors said he beat his 8-year-old son after the boy got in trouble at school.

Shawnbay R. King, 38, is charged with felony aggravated battery of a child in the beating, which took place Feb. 25 at King’s home in the 6400 block of South Langley Avenue, according to Cook County court records.

King had primary custody of his son, and when the boy came home after getting into trouble at school, King beat him with a belt, an aluminum broom stick and his fists, Assistant State’s Attorney Danny Hanichak said Sunday in bond court.

The boy told his mother and was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where doctors found 34 separate marks, scars and abrasions on the boy’s face, legs and back, according to Hanichak.

Doctors determined that 10 of the 34 marks had recently occurred, the prosecutor said.

Hanichak also said the boy is now living with his mother.

An order of protection also has been issued in the case, he said.
