A 22-year-old man was killed early Saturday morning after he walked into traffic on the Stevenson Expressway in suburban Bolingbrook.

Salvador J. Pena Jr., of Burbank, Illinois, was a passenger in a car traveling northbound on Interstate 55, according to Illinois State Police and the Will County coroner’s office.

About 1 a.m. Saturday, Pena got into an argument with the car’s driver, and the driver pulled over to the side of the road near Illinois Route 53, state police said.

For unknown reasons, the 22-year-old man then walked into traffic and was fatally struck by several passing vehicles, according to police and the coroner’s office.

Pena was pronounced dead at 2:52 a.m. from multiple injuries due to automobile striking a pedestrian, according to the coroner’s office.

No citations were being issued in the accident, state police said. Police were still investigating the accident.

Northbound traffic was shut down for hours after the incident but was reopened about three hours later.
