Aurora police said a man was showing friends how to take apart a handgun when he shot himself in the hand on Monday morning.

According to police reports, police were called to an Aurora hospital around 11:15 a.m. for a report of a man who had been shot in the hand.

Police learned that the 25-year-old victim was allegedly showing two men how to disassemble a handgun at a home in the 700 block of Charles Street when he accidentally shot himself.

Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli said the victim either unintentionally loaded a round in the chamber, or didn’t realize one had already been loaded when the shot was fired.

The shot went through the victim’s hand near his little finger, and pierced a box spring and mattress before it lodged itself in the floor.

Ferrelli said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
