Multiple outbreaks of measles have sickened at least 170 people across 17 states and the District of Columbia in 2015, according to Illinois health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (The CDC updates its figures weekly on Mondays). Roughly 74 percent of cases are related to an outbreak of the disease at Disneyland.
Once declared eliminated in the United States, measles cases have been increasing steadily since 2011 as more and more families eschew vaccinations over unfounded fears that the vaccinations are linked to autism or are preserved using harmful chemicals. Cases of measles are cropping up largely in pockets of unvaccinated people, though children too young for the shot (as is the case in Illinois) or those too sick for their immune system to safely process the vaccine can also be affected.
