After a season in which he earned his 800th win and guided the Stevenson girls basketball team to an undefeated record in the North Suburban Lake, Tom Dineen is out as Patriots coach.
Stevenson athletic director Tricia Betthauser said late Tuesday night that Dineen’s contract was not renewed.
“We want to thank Tom for his time with the program. We’re looking to the next chapter of Stevenson basketball,” Betthauser said.
Betthauser had no comment as to why Dineen was not offered a contract for the 2015-16 season. She said coaching contracts at Stevenson are for one year.
“At this point, a contract for next season is not being offered,” Betthauser said.
Dineen just completed his sixth season at Stevenson, where he has compiled a 132-47 record. The Patriots finished the year 26-5, including a 12-0 NSC Lake record. Stevenson’s season ended with a 59-55 loss to Buffalo Grove in a Class 4A regional final Feb. 20. Stevenson also lost to Antioch in the NSC championship game.
On Jan. 17, Dineen earned his 800th win when the Patriots beat DeKalb 67-28. Before coming to Stevenson in 2009, he coached at Buffalo Grove for 29 seasons, winning a state title in 1999-2000. His career record over 35 seasons is 810-277.
Ironically, when Dineen took over as Stevenson coach, it was Betthauser who he replaced. Before that, Frank Mattucci had a 15-year run as coach, winning state titles in 1995 and ’96.
Dineen declined to comment..
