GARY—Hours before dawn Friday, police found a barely conscious man lying in the road on Virginia Street, just south of 11th Avenue.
Korey Carroll, 28, of Gary, was curled in a fetal position and unable to speak as Patrolman Gerald Richardson reached him at about 2:50 a.m., police said.
Carroll had been struck in the head and was bleeding profusely, Sgt. Thomas Decanter said. Officers blocked off the street until medics arrived to take Carroll to the Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus, where he was treated for his head injury. Police said it appeared Carroll had been struck in the head with a bottle.
