The Chicago Fire were held scoreless for the third time in four preseason games but still came away with a 1-1 tie on Wednesday night against the host Portland Timbers.

Portland defender Norberto Paparatto headed a ball into his own net in the 44th minute to account for a Fire score in their first preseason against a Major League Soccer team.
Midfielder Michael Nanchoff gave the Timbers (1-1-3) a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute, the first goal the Fire have allowed in four games.
Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson played all 90 minutes and also served as captain.
The Fire (1-0-3) close the preseason and the three-team Simple Invitational on Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. match against Vancouver at Portland’s Providence Park.
They are scheduled to open the Major League Soccer season March 6 in Los Angeles. Their home opener is March 14 against Vancouver.
