An argument over where their son would sleep one night in August escalated to broken windows and police intervention, and landed parents in Gary City Court Monday morning.
Amber Evans, 29, was arrested and charged with mischief after Otis Givens, 38, called police to say she had broken out several windows Aug. 7 at his home in Tarrytown.
Givens testified the boy was asleep and he told Evans to let the child stay for the night, but said Evans started breaking windows. He said the cost to repair them was $500, and by the time he had the money, the weather turned cold, so they are not replaced. Court referee Itsia Rivera observed he must have a high heating bill and Givens agreed.
Evans, a junior at Indiana University Northwest who is also a hairdresser, admitted she became frustrated because she kept knocking and no one answered the door. She said she broke one window from her continued knocking, but denied breaking the other five. “He tries to use the child when our personal relationship isn’t working out,” Evans told Rivera.
Rivera found Evans guilty and suspended a 60-day sentence, but ordered a six-month probation, anger management and $250 restitution.
