There are a lot of great places to get a good cup of coffee in Geneva, but FreshGround Roasting owner Eric Andersen wanted to provide a way to make a good cup of coffee at home.
Andersen and his wife, Krista opened FreshGround Roasting at 321 Stevens in Geneva this past October after operating for three years in West Chicago. Fresh Ground Roasting is not a café, but is instead a whole bean coffee roaster offering a variety of specialty coffees.
The coffee beans that are sold at FreshGround Roasting are purchased through missions and organizations that work directly with the farmers. The missions teach the farmers how to grow a better quality bean and ultimately provide more profit to the poor farming families. “This was a huge part of the decision to go into the coffee roasting business,” says Andersen.
The Andersens made the move to Geneva to provide a larger space for their coffee classes. Every Friday morning, Andersen teaches a Coffee Cupping class that he describes as similar to a wine tasting. “This is a great opportunity to try different coffees and learn about where they come from,” says Andersen.
On Saturday mornings, Andersen leads a coffee brewing class where he uses the same bean brewed four or five different ways to produce a different taste. Some of the brewing methods include Chemex, French press or pour over. “The classes fill up quickly,” says Andersen. All classes are free and signup is available on their Facebook page.
All coffees are roasted on site and sold as whole bean or ground to your specification. FreshGround Roasting also sells brew kits, grinders and other coffee accessories. Coffee specials are featured each month and February’s special is coffee from the Aprocassi Coopertive in Peru.
Lou Malnati’s Opens 40th Store
Lou and Jean Malnati opened their first pizzeria in Lincolnwood in 1971. The buttery crust and fresh ingredients used their deep dish pizza had customers lined up around the corner. As word spread, their customer based grew enough to open another store and then another.
On Feb. 17, Lou Malnati’s opened their 40th store at 2848 U.S. Route 34 in Oswego. “We are excited to be a part of Oswego and to expand our services to the western communities,” says Mindy Caplan, director of marketing.
Lou Malnati’s is still family owned and operated after more than 40 years in business. In addition to their famous deep dish pizzas, Lou Malnati’s offers a thin crust pizza, sandwiches and salads. The Oswego store will offer carryout and delivery only and is currently hiring kitchen workers and drivers.
