District 203 adopts school calendar
The Naperville School District 203 is going forward with a 2016-17 calendar that calls for classes to start Aug. 17 and end May 25, if no emergency days are used.
Deputy Superintendent Kaine Osburn said two versions of the calendar were shopped around the district to administrators, teachers and parents for the past month. The one that had the most support called for winter break to be held Dec. 23, 2016, through Jan. 6, 2017. Students would return from break Jan. 9.
Built into the calendar are five emergency days. If all five days were used, the last day of school would be June 2.
This year, because the District 203 used three emergency days so far on Jan. 7 and 8 and Feb. 8, the last day of school would be June 2. The school year still can be extended should another severe weather event occur.
Students to pay fees for new clubs
Students participating in the following clubs or teams at Naperville Central or Naperville North will be assessed a $50 fee starting in the 2015-16 school year: bass fishing, Business Professionals of America, chess, Distributive Educators of America, Family Career and Community Leaders of America, Future Farmers of America, Science Olympiad and Youth and Government.
Each year the activity directors from the two high schools evaluate the schools’ clubs. They determined the eight clubs have been established and should be assessed the $50 student fee to be in line with the other clubs already paying the fee because the clubs have similar levels of expenditures.
