Two men charged in connection to a Montgomery shooting that escalated into a standoff with police in Aurora made their first formal appearances in court Wednesday.
During brief hearings before Kane County Judge Susan Clancy Boles, 19-year-old Kenneth Newsome, who is listed in court records as being from Montgomery, and 20-year-old Edwardo Hernandez of Aurora, were each appointed public defenders and scheduled for March court dates.
Both men remain held in Kane County Jail, with Newsome on $510,000 bail, Hernandez on $30,000 bail.
According to authorities and court records, Newsome allegedly shot a man twice in the leg and fired a .45-caliber handgun toward two other men during a fight near Krug Elementary School in Montgomery on Feb. 6.
After the shooting, Newsome and Hernandez fled to a home Hernandez rented on Homer Avenue in Aurora. They surrendered several hours later without incident.
The dispute between Newsome and Hernandez and the other men is believed to be tied to a woman Newsome once dated.
Newsome is charged with attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm and several other offenses. Hernandez, accused of having a 4-inch knife with a handle made of brass knuckles, is charged with mob action and possession of a knife.
