player ready...Beginning Saturday, residents in and near Naperville will have a new place to bring refuse that can’t be hauled away from the curb on garbage collection day.
The $1.2 million facility at 156 Fort Hill Drive will accept oil, antifreeze, household cleaning products, flammable materials, fertilizers, paint, prescription medicine, herbicides and other items banned from Illinois landfills. It was constructed, using state grant funds to cover nearly 75 percent of the expense, to replace the weekend collection center that since 1992 has operated at the north side fire station on Brookdale Road just east of Route 59.
The city reported that during fiscal 2014, the program took in 266 tons of household hazardous materials.
Administered cooperatively with the city of Aurora and Will, DuPage and Kane counties, the center is the only permanent hazardous materials drop-off location in northeast Illinois, and one of just four such facilities in operation statewide.
The new center, situated on the north end of the city’s Public Works campus at Fort Hill and Jefferson Avenue, will provide a larger and more efficient setting for collection of the items, including a covered drop-off area and added room for sorting and storage, along with office and staff space. It is expected to shorten wait times for people dropping off materials and features enhanced safety with use of spill control, sprinklers and ventilation.
A ceremonial ribbon-cutting and tour set for 2 p.m. Friday will give the public a peek at the new facility.
Hours of operation will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, excluding holidays.
