GARY—The mother of a 17-year-old boy called police Sunday night from her east side home after her son came home and collapsed on the kitchen floor with a gunshot wound, police said.

Demonte Coleman reported he was walking in his neighborhood near 21st Avenue and Virginia Street about 7 p.m. when two black men wearing all-black clothing and masks approached him and demanded money, police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Decanter said.

One of the assailants had a revolver and shot Coleman in the left shoulder, Decanter said. The victim ran home, where his mother called for police and an ambulance. He was treated at the Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus for a non-life-threatening injury, police said.

The victim was unable to tell police exactly where the shooting occurred, Lt. Thomas Pawlak said. Detective Cpl. Edward Gonzalez is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information can call him at 881-4750.

Almost four hours later, a 43-year-old Glen Park man said he drove to the Delaney Community Housing Development and was looking for an address in the 2200 block of Carver Street when a man asked him for a light. Walker Davis told police he told the man he didn’t have a light and the man started “tussling” with him. Davis ran south and east as the assailant fired several shots in his direction, the report states. Davis said called police, who met him in the 2600 block of Harrison Street.

Police found his car, still running, where he had left it, the police report states.
