GARY—When police checked on a driver who appeared to be asleep behind the wheel of a car Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of McDonald’s at 5th Avenue and Grant Street, they encountered Clayton Sanders, 26, and his cousin, Darrell Sanders, 25.
Patrolmen Jeston Walker saw open alcohol containers in the car, then found Clayton Sanders had marijuana in his pocket, the arrest report states. He was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
Darrell Sanders was arrested after he became loud and unruly and refused to cooperate with officers. He was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting law enforcement, then obtained a third charge after front desk personnel discovered he had allegedly broken a small pane of thick glass in his cell, police said.
In Gary City Court Wednesday morning, Darrell Sanders told Judge Deidre Monroe he didn’t know how many times he’d been arrested. He pleaded not guilty to the charges, then said, “I was drunk. I don’t remember. I did something dumb I guess.”
The cousins return to court for trial April 15.
