Trisha Lustig is making an emotional appeal for safer streets around Lakewood Creek Elementary School in Montgomery.
Lustig is the mother of an 8-year-old girl who was grazed by a car near Avalon and Hanbury lanes on Thursday on her way home from school. The girl was not seriously injured, but her mother says she was shaken up by the incident.
Lustig cried during her discussion with Montgomery trustees Monday night, asking what can be done to make the area safer.
“There have been many close calls in my neighborhood,” Lustig said. “I had heard the stories. My daughter ran into the house and cried for 30 minutes before I could get her to tell me what happened.”
Lustig wants to see stop signs at Avalon and Hanbury to make the intersection safer. A petition drive to make the change posted on Facebook by Lustig got 61 supporters before she closed it. She said she ended the drive because she believes the village is taking her concerns seriously.
Montgomery Police Chief Dan Meyers said the incident involving Lustig’s daughter is under investigation and is classified as a hit and run.
“Police were not called until 24 hours later. The police should be called immediately to the scene. The only description is a black vehicle,” he said.
Mayor Matt Brolley said he has seen that residents have been expressing concerns on social media.
“I saw the petition that went out on Facebook (Monday). As a parent, this is an emotional story and one instance is more than enough to take this seriously. I can assure you we will do that,” he said.
Village officials spent some time at the scene of the incident after school on Monday and Meyers said his officers are still investigating the matter.
