According to an IHSAA release, Griffith and Hammond will forfeit basketball games at every level throughout the 2014-15 season.
In addition, the teams will be put on probation for the entire 2015-16 season.
The incident that ignited the brawl was a hard foul from behind on Griffith’s Anthony Murphy by Hammond’s Tim Echoles. Murphy slammed into the mat behind the basket with 5:32 left in the first quarter and Griffith leading 4-0. Fans spilled onto the floor and players from both teams started mixing it up before officials cancelled the game.
In addition to losing the rest of the season, both teams will have to pay $500 forfeiture fees for all remaining away games, the game on February 7 will be recorded as a double forfeit and every player and coach will have to complete a sportsmanship class from the National Federation of High School Athletic Association’s website.
