The Glenbrook South girls gymnastics team sat in a circle on the floor and waited for the team standings to be announced after Monday’s Mundelein Sectional.

The anticipation grew after each team was called. When it was revealed that Mundelein took second place, the Titans exploded to their feet with excitement before their name was even broadcast.
In a sectional where the six teams were separated by less than four points, Glenbrook South totaled 142.625 to finish first and automatically qualify for state. The host Mustangs scored a 141.325, and Carmel placed third at 141.125. New Trier and Warren tied for fourth at 139.250, while Glenbrook North finished with 139.075.
“We had no idea we won until the very end,” Glenbrook South senior Kaci Castino said of the program’s first sectional title. “We knew it would be extremely close.”
Glenbrook South freshman Bebe Haramaras was the team’s top finisher, taking second on the balance beam at 9.275. Sophomore Hannah Hartley took third on the floor exercise (9.600) and fourth on the vault (9.450).
Loyola junior Claire Sullivan was the area’s lone sectional champion, finishing first on the balance beam at 9.300.
The state meet is Feb. 20-21 at Palatine.
