Selena Lasota turned her college lacrosse debut into one of the most memorable victories in Northwestern history.
That says something, given that the Wildcats have won seven NCAA titles in the past 10 seasons.
Lasota, the highly touted Northwestern freshman from British Columbia, scored her fourth goal of the game in overtime to complete a comeback from a seven-goal deficit and beat USC 12-11 Saturday afternoon at the L.A. Coliseum.
“I was out there to dig deep,” Lasota said. “If I had the chance, I didn’t want to let it go, so I just put it (the shot) away.”
The Wildcats trailed 7-0 with seven minutes left in the first half and 9-3 with 25 minutes left in the game. Two goals by Lasota, who also had two assists, and four by senior Kara Mupo of Miller Place, N.Y., led the rally.
Mupo’s fifth goal of the game tied the score at 11 with 37 seconds to play in regulation.
“Hopefully we got the jitters out a little and we’re ready to play (after this),” coach Kelly Amonte Hiller said.
The Wildcats, No. 5 in the pre-season coaches poll, are at sixth-ranked Virginia next Saturday for the Cavaliers season opener.
