The fire at 1414 S. Western Ave., which began about 7:30 p.m., was largely confined to a one-story loading dock area attached to a four-story brick building, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Deputy District Chief Jeff Lyle.
For safety purposes, after their initial attack, firefighters had to stay outside of the building, and the materials that caught fire were underneath the dock and hard to reach with either conventional hoses or distributor nozzles, which distribute a spray of water in hard-to-reach areas, Lyle said. Fire crews brought in equipment to spray fire-suppressing foam and the fire was struck out about 10 p.m.
Traffic and CTA buses were rerouted in the area during the fire.
