The Lake County Sheriff’s Office’s seat belt and DUI details over the Super Bowl weekend resulted in two arrests for driving under the influence and 36 additional citations to motorists for not wearing a seat belt or driving on a suspended license.
The two seat belt details resulted in 18 citations, including five for not wearing a seat belt and two for driving on a suspended license. During the one DUI patrol there were 20 citations issued, including the two for DUI, two for driving without a valid driver’s license and five for driving without insurance.
Federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration helped pay for the extra patrols. The money was distributed locally through the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety.
In a press release, Sheriff Mark Curran Jr. reminded Lake County residents to “always designate a sober driver and do not let friends drive drunk. These are just two of several simple steps to help avoid a tragic crash or an arrest due to drunk driving.”
