Shutack made his verbal commitment hours after arriving home Monday from an official visit to Tennessee. He informed members of the Rutgers coaching staff around 10 p.m.
“Rutgers was happy, but the problem was that I might have called too late. It was around 11 p.m. Eastern Time,” Shutack said.
Shutack’s is expected to be one of four offensive linemen to sign Wednesday with Rutgers for the Class of 2015, according to Rivals.com, which gave him three stars.
He made his official visit to Rutgers on Jan. 23-25. On his Twitter account @JackShutack, he posted a photo of him posing in a Nazareth state championship hoodie on Times Square with fellow Rutgers recruit Anthony Folkerts, a tight end from Valdosta, Georgia.
“I’m glad it’s over,” Shutack said. “It was pretty stressful, but I think I made the right decision.”
Tennessee wanted him to be a preferred walk-on. Other schools that made formal offers were Iowa State, Minnesota, North Carolina State and Western Michigan.
“I’m excited. It’s going to be fun being able to play in the Big House (at Michigan) and The Shoe (at Ohio State),” he said.
According to Rivals.com, Shutack is the 34th-ranked prospect in the state and the sixth-ranked offensive lineman.
