Capabilities
No periscope: Has advanced sonar and intelligence-gathering systems.
Underwater: Capable of staying underwater for up to three months.
Mission: Equipped to destroy hostile ships and submarines, control sea lanes and defend a carrier or expeditionary strike group.
Special options: Supports special warfare operations and can host a minisubmarine or dry dock shelter. Contains a lockout chamber that allows special forces to exit while submerged.
Stealth: Designed for increased maneuverability and stealth to attack targets at sea and on land in deep and shallow water.
Ceremonies: The keel-laying ceremony, which for a submarine roughly marks the midpoint of construction, took place in June 2014; the christening, where the sub is officially named, is scheduled for June 2015, after which the sub goes through extensive testing at sea; and the commissioning, where the sub becomes active in the Navy, is scheduled for December 2015.
